The third and last format to use the coaxial type cassette as used in the original VCR specification. Although they looked the same as standard VCR cassettes, the mechanical and magnetic specifications of the SVR tapes were superior, and the earlier tapes could not be used in SVR machines. The machine detected the difference by the presence of an extra piece of plastic moulded near the front of SVR tapes. Although SVR machines could not use VCR tapes, tapes designed for the SVR format could be used in VCR and VCR-LP format machines.
